Form:
mid-sized shrub with many stems; rounded unless trimmed

Bark: gray; splitting to reveal lighter inner bark; may
appear striped
Twig: brownish green with
conspicuous ridges; red-brown sharp buds
Leaf:simple, opposite, 1 ½ to 3 inches long; oval to elliptical; finely
serrated margin; thin; green above, slightly duller below; turns bright
red in autumn
Fruit: ¼ to 1/3 inch red capsule opening to reveal orange
structure inside; ripens in early fall
Flower: appear in June; pale yellow-green; ½ in across
appearing in clusters of 3
Habitat: nonnative; introduced from Asia;
may out compete native species if it escapes from cultivation
