Leaf: Opposite, simple leaves with serrated margin.  They are 5 to 13 cm in length and have deeply palmately lobed.  Some cultivars so deeply lobed that leaf appears compound.   The color is highly variable depending on cultivar, but commonly deep red.

Twig: Slender, glabrous, red or green with buds broadly conical, green or red, base of bud hidden by tan, fuzzy fringe.

Bark: Light brown on surface, dark brown when cut, ridged and furrowed with a rough diamond pattern. Light brown and scaly when young.

Flower: Inconspicuous, small, red to purple flowers forming in terminal clusters.  Usually appearing in mid to late spring.

Fruit: Double samara, 2 to 3 cm long, with divergent (90 degrees) wings, reddish brown, persistent during the winter.

Text Box: Other:  They are native to Korea, China, and Japan and are planted as an ornamental tree throughout the United States.  However it has never naturalized.
