Platanus X acerifolia

Form: A very large tree with large branches with a round to slightly pyramidal crown.  Usually 20 to 25 m tall but can  reach up to 30 m in height.

Leaf: Alternate and simple with palmate veination.  12 to 23 cm long and equally  as wide.  The leave has 3 to 5 distinct lobed and is coarsely toothed with medium green color above, paler below. Petiole base covers the bud.

Twig: Zig-zag pattern and are green changing to grayish brown. Leaves cover the lateral and terminal buds but buds are conical, reddish and covered with a single cap-like scale. Also there are stipule scar encircles the twig.

Flower: Not showy, monoecious with separate males and females usually in pairs.  They appear in early spring as the leaves begin to unfold.

Bark: Attractive and light brown exfoliating into many creamy, olive and yellow patches.

Fruit: A round multiple of achenes, 3 to 5 cm in diameter and brown.  They are usually borne in pairs and hang from long, thin stalks. Ripen in October and stay throughout the winter.

Text Box: Other:  This cross between the American plane tree and the oriental plane tree, originally from Spain or France, has been planted as an ornamental throughout the United States.  This tree has vigorous clones and is very resistant to anthracnose.
