Text Box: Tree Form: Medium-sized tree, 12-18m tall. Crown is dense and rounded.

Text Box: Leaf: Opposite arrangement, simple, 5-lobed, palmate venation. Sinuses are rounded; lobes have slight teeth that are spaced far apart. Petiole exudes milky sap if squeezed. Dark green above, paler underside. Remain on tree longer in autumn than other maples.

 

 

Text Box: Flower: Appear before leaves in early spring. Yellow to greenish-yellow, in clusters. Each flower is approximately 8mm. in diameter.

Text Box: Fruit: A paired samara, 4-5 cm. in length. Wings are widely divergent (nearly 180°), seed cavity is flattened. Remain on tree in autumn.

Text Box: Twig: Glabrous, glossy, stout. Light brown to greenish in color. The terminal bud id large and rounded, keeled, and has 2-3 pairs of distinct bud scales. Lateral buds are appressed (flattened against the stem).

Text Box: Bark: Gray, uniform, smooth in young trees. Older trees have long, slender, interlacing ridges, forming a ‘diamond pattern’. 
 

 

Text Box: Other: Originated in Europe. Commonly planted in urban areas, parks, and in landscaping. Pollution-tolerant and shade-tolerant. Common cultivars include ‘Deborah’  (purplish leaves in spring) and ‘Crimson King’ (retains purplish leaves all summer). Classified as a hard maple.
