Text Box: Bark: Young bark is very dark (black) and rough. Mature bark has brownish-orange appearance. Mature bark is also furrowed and grooved

Text Box: Leaves: Needles most often in clusters of 3 (can be 2)  (12-28 cm in length) Thin, pointed, rough edges Crushed leaves have turpentine/citrus odor

Text Box: Fruit and Flowers: Monoecious.  Seed cones have round, oval appearance 7 to 14 cm in length. Cones mature Aug.-Sept. Thicker scales are found near the tip with ridges on the end. Cones have reddish-brown coloration

 

 

Text Box: Twig: Young twigs appear orange colored and smell similar to an orange. Mature twigs will turn black.  Buds are sticky

Text Box: Notes: Life span can reach 400-500 yrs. Bark and cones used for speedy, hot fires.  Wolf lichen readily grown on trunks and the associated dead branches.  Grows in various soils
