Text Box: Bark: Thick dark reddish brown with fissures. Inner bark slippery

Text Box: Leaf: Alternate, simple, obovate to oblong, 4-8”, unequal base, very scabrous above,        pubescent below, several veins fork near margin, dark green, yellow in fall.

Text Box: Twig: Stout, pubescent, with lenticels, light gray brown.
 

Text Box: Flower:  Greenish red, perfect, hairy fascicles in March –April.  Not showy. 
 

 

 
Text Box: Fruit: A single seeded samara, pubescent, shallow notch at top, May.
 

 

 

Text Box: Of interest: The mucous- like inner bark was chewed by pioneers as a thirst quencher and sore throat remedy. Close cousin to American Elm.  Also susceptible to the Dutch Elm disease.
