Text Box: Leaf: Opposite arrangement, 5 lobes, palmate venation. Has a squarish overall shape. Sinuses are broad and rounded, margin entire (without teeth). Glabrous, green above, with a lighter underside. Red, orange, or yellow in autumn.

 

Text Box: Flower: Blooms at same time as leaves. Clustered on thin pedicels. Yellow to green in color.

Text Box: Fruit: A paired samara, with slightly divergent to parallel wings, borne on long, thin pedicels. Small (each wing is under 2.5 cm long), falls off tree in early autumn.

Text Box: Twig: Smooth and glossy. Light brown, reddish brown or gray. Lenticels distinct, lighter than twig. Terminal bud small and very pointed.

Text Box: Bark: Dark gray to grayish brown. Becomes furrowed with age. Older trees have large, deep fissures that peel off of tree at sides.

 

 

 

Text Box: Other: A native tree, is a major component of beech-maple forests. Slow-growing, shade-tolerant, and grows best in well-drained soils. Used as an ornamental and for maple syrup. Can be damaged by road salt.
