above, paler below; large irregular rounded teeth, rarely lobed

in length on long stalks (2 inches); borne singularly or doubly; cap is
bowl shaped covering 1/3 of nut, matures autumn on first season

Flower: appearing May to June with the leaves; male is 2 to
4 inches long, yellow-green; female is very small in leaf axil, green to
red.
