Growth and Survival of Walleye (Sander vitreus) in Michigan Hatchery Ponds

Marcy Knoll

Walleye (Sander vitreus) are an important game fish in the state of Michigan.  The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) stocks the Great Lakes with these fish in order to maintain the walleye population.  My project focuses on the growth and survival of walleye in MDNR culture ponds.  My research involves the comparison of dissolved oxygen, temperature, zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and water nutrient levels in each pond.  With this research, there can be a better understanding as to the appropriate biotic and abiotic conditions for young-of-year walleye.  I will identify the stomach contents of walleye from each pond to determine their primary source of food.
