1. General features of viruses
  2. Viral replication
  3. Influenza virus
  4. HIV

1. The concepts covered here can be reviewed in your textbook, pages 381-386, and your lecture notes.

2. Viral replication always occur inside of a cell. Virologists recognize 7 stages of viral replication. Not all virus exhibit well defined stages and in some cases two or more stages can occur simultaneously. On a piece of paper list the 7 stages of viral multiplication. On your list, note on which stages do you think could happen simultaneously.

3. Bacteriophages (or phages) are viruses, which infect bacterial cells. Review your textbook and your lab manual and define the following terms as they relate to bacteriophages:

4. Review figures 13.11 and 13.12 in your textbook. Draw two diagrams, one illustrating a virulent phage undergoing lytic cycles, and another illustrating a temperate phage undergoing lysogenic cycles. How do temperate phages replicate (hint: there are two ways)?

5. If you feel that you have mastered the concepts on this page, you can move to the next topic of this subunit, which explores the influenza virus.
