TAXONOMY Kingdom: Animalia First discovered by Pengo in 1876 in the Azov Sea, Cercopagis pengoi, then recognized as a species of Bythotrephes, was named Bythotrphes pengoi by Ostroumov in 1892. In 1897, Sars, unaware of the reports to that date, named an organism discovered in the Baltic Sea Cercopagis tenera. Researchers have since adopted the scientific name Cercopagis pengoi. The potential imact of C. pengoi, a recent invader of the Great Lakes, is a topic of much interest. C. pengoi was discovered in Lake Ontario in 1998, and since that time has rapidly spread to Lake Michigan and five finger lakes (Grigorovich et al. 2000). Morphology |
