Student Researchers in the Steinhilb Lab
Lab Activities/Photos
Brain Adamski: Brian worked in the lab in the Summer and Fall of 2007 assessing tau levels in genetically modified flies. Brian is currently pursuing a Master's degree at St. Louis University (St. Louis, MO).
Francesca Acosta Tovar: Fran joined the lab in Fall 2007 and worked cooperatively with myself and Dr. Mueller in the Chemistry department on our Faculty Insight Team project on the evolution, checmical structure, and medicinal application of the Euglenoid storage carbohydrate, Paramylon.
Ryan Kittredge: Ryan joined the lab in June 2007 and worked on his BIO403 project in Spring 2008. Ryan's project involved the biochemical analysis of protein expression levels in transgenic flies. Ryan is currently applying to Pharmacy Schools to get his PharmD degree.
James McGrath: James started in the lab in August 2007 and did his BIO403 project on Scanning electron microscopy imaging of tau expression in Drosophila. After graduating in May 2008, James did some additional microscopy work in the summer of 2008 before leaving for his new position at MPI Research in Mattawan, MI.
Krystina Cunningham: Krystina joined the lab in January 2007 and began her BIO403 research project in Summer 2007. Her research project investigated the importance of phosphorylation in tau proteolysis. Krystina continued to work in the lab until May of 2008 when she graduated from CMU. Krystina is currently working toward her PhD in the Physical Therapy Program at Central Michigan University.
Past Students
Pratik Chhetri: Pratik joined the lab in May 2008 and will be a Sophomore this year. Pratik has been optimizing drug feeding conditions in Drosophila.
Don Tait: Don started working in the lab in May 2008 and will be a Sophomore this year. Don has been working on the isolation and purification of nucleic acids and proteins from tau flies.
Sarah DeVos: Sarah begain working in the lab in January 2007 and will be a Senior this year. Most recently, Sarah has been working on several molecular biology projects in lab to create mutant forms of human tau. Sarah's distinctive accomplishments include being awarded the Arthur Loren Kontio Outstanding Young Biologist Prize, an Undergraduate Student Research and Creative Endeavors Grant, and a Sigma Xi Award. Sarah was selected to participate in the Summer Student Internship Program at the Van Andel Institute (Grand Rapids, MI; Summer 2007) and the Jackson Laboratory Summer Internship Program (Bar Harbor, ME; Summer 2008).
James Reinecke: James started working in the lab in September 2006 and will be a Senior this year. He is currently performing biochemical and genetic analyses using Drosophila as a model system. James has won several awards, including the Dr. Maurice H. Chapin Pre-medicine Endowed Scholarship, the Outstanding CMU Student in Confocal Microscopy award, the Undergraduate Student Research and Creative Endeavors Grant, and was chosen as the Undergraduate Poster Award winner at the 2008 meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (Michigan Chapter). In addition, James was selected for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx, NY; Summer 2007) and the AMGEN Scholars Summer Undergraduate Research Program at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA; Summer 2008).
Sarah pipets reagents for a PCR reaction (Sept '07)
James sorts flies at the fly station to set up a cross (Sept '07)
Megan Wood is preparing vials of fly food to maintain stocks and set up crosses (Sept '07)
Sarah and James present their most recent research findings at Posters at the Capitol (Lansing, MI) on April 16, 2008
For two years running, the Steinhilb Lab has emerged victorious over the Juris lab in backyard badminton. Once again, the coveted Mojito Cup remains with the tough competitors in the Steinhilb Lab (May 1, 2008).
Our friends in the Juris Lab: Kevin Nevorski, Matt Ignash, Andrea Celmer, Samantha Johnston, Pam Reckow, and Paul Stewart (May '08)
What would an end-of-the-semester gathering be without showing off impressive guitar, drums and singing skills on Rock Band? (May '08)
The Steinhilb Lab: Sarah DeVos, Ryan Kittredge, Don Tait, James Reinecke, Krystina Cunningham and James McGrath (May '08)
