Through my research, we are hoping to determine if isolation due to urbanization has differentially impacted three species of freshwater turtle in Medicine Lake, Minnesota. We are characterizing various population level genetic parameters for painted turtles (Chrysemys picta), snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina), and spiny softshell turtles (Apalone spinifera) at both Medicine Lake and at Weaver Dunes Scientific and Natural Area, a more rural and undisturbed site. We expect that a better understanding of how urbanization and isolation have differentially impacted these species will be important for future management of urban turtle populations. My research focuses on the movements and home ranges of three freshwater turtle species in an urban Minnesota lake.
