The population size of Sharp-tailed grouse in Wisconsin has been declining for many years and the species currently appear to live in isolated patches of habitat around the state. We are using microsatellites to evaluate the degree of inbreeding in each of the populations and obtain an estimate of the amount of dispersal occuring between the populations. In conjunction with the Minnesota DNR, we are also examining the genetic variation found in Minnesota Sharp-tailed grouse to determine if they are a suitable source of birds to reintroduce to Wisconsin.
