This project uses demographic and genetic techniques to try and evaluate the status of the marten in Michigan's Lower Peninsula following their reintroduction in the 1980s. The demographic component involves extensive trapping and radio-telemetry of the captured marten to determine where the marten, what habitat they are using in this region, and how many marten exist in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The genetic component is an attempt to determine the amount of genetic variation remaining in the Lower Peninsula marten, the reproductive success of martens in the Lower Peninsula, and how much dispersal occurs between the marten populations in the Lower Peninsula. All of this information will be combined to develop a Population Viability Analysis (PVA) for the marten in Michigan's Lower Peninsula and provide additional information for the management of this species.
