Isle Royale is located approximately 24 off the coast in Lake Superior and is home to the longest continuously running predator-prey
study in the US. Wolves and moose independently colonized the island before 1920. The moose population has undergone extreme fluctuations
since continuous censusing started over 50 years ago. Researchers at Michigan Tech University have been collecting moose carcasses on the
island for over 40 years. We are examining the genetics of these moose to evaluate inbreeding avoidance strategies and immigration rates to
determine how the populations have been able to persist.
