Credit Hours

  • This course is worth 4 credit hours.

Prerequisites

  • You must take the ALEKS math placement exam and achieve at least 70% on it between April 15 and August 29. Otherwise, you will be automatically removed from the course. Go to the website for more details, and note the sidebar on the left of that website.

Teaching Assistants

  • The Discussion/Recitation sections of this course are mandatory. This is where your worksheets and quizzes take place. You can only attend the session that you are registered for. Each TA who runs these sessions will have office hours, as indicated below. All office hours will be held in 341 Altgeld Hall (or possibly 343 Altgeld Hall in case of overflow). Tutoring

  • There will be free tutoring by MATH 221 TAs starting Tuesday, Sept 2, provided by the Math Department, from 4-8pm, Monday through Thursday, held in 341 Altgeld Hall (with overflow in 343 Altgeld Hall). The last day of tutoring will be Wednesday, Dec. 10th.
  • For business students, there is free tutoring for MATH 221 starting Sept 7th, running Sunday-Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm in BIF 1049. For more information, see this PDF. (Warning: neither I nor the Department of Mathematics make any guarantees regarding the quality of this tutoring offered by the College of Business Tutors. We are just making you aware of it.)

Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity may be summed up by the phrase, "your work must be your own." Violations will be processed according to the established guidelines. Please note that "it is the responsibility of the student to refrain from infractions of academic integrity, from conduct that may lead to suspicion of such infractions, and from conduct that aids others in such infractions" (Section 1-401 of the Student Code). Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, cheating, forgery, fabrication, or plagiarising as outlined in Section 1-402 of the Student Code. A range of academic sanctions may be taken against a student who engages in academic dishonesty. Students with Disabilities

I am pleased to offer reasonable accommodations. Please bring your letter from DRES within one week of the start of the semester or one week of when you add the course (whichever is later). Please note that you will only be able to take a DRES exam if you clear the exam date and time with me before you submit a request.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes and are responsible for all information presented. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get notes on what you missed. For University-excused absences as outlined in Section 1-501(c) of the Student Code, typically your grade for any missed work of significant weight will be based on your grade for the final exam, or the grade breakdown for your work will be reweighted. Please notify me ASAP so we may discuss how to make up any missed work, and have appropriate documentation sent to me ASAP.

Calculators, Portable Electronic Devices, and Distracting Behaviours

No calculators (or other electronic aids) are permitted on quizzes and exams, so study accordingly. The use of any portable electronic device (phones, e-readers, mp3 players, etc.) during class with- out prior permission of the instructor is prohibited. Other behaviours (reading a newspaper, etc.) which the instructor deems distracting, must be stopped in class. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in a lowered overall grade, and you may be asked to leave the room.

If you wish to ask an administrative type question, make sure that it is not answered on this website first. Due to the huge amount of emails from students I receive daily, I will simply refer you to this website for basic course information. Also, I will not answer math-related questions by email. You should either ask myself or your TA after class, or go to your TA's office hours or the MATH 221 tutoring hours in the evening.
