Assessing the Quality of Gray Wolf Habitat in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan

(2002-2004)

 Undergraduate Student:  Brad Potter

Unfortunately, land managers lack data on the distribution and quality of gray wolf habitat in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan despite the fact that this information is fundamental to the management of wolf populations that appear to be starting to recolonize this region.  In this study, we used geographical information system (GIS) techniques to develop habitat-based models for predicting the occurrence of favorable wolf habitat.  This research will generated: 1) a model that will serve as a functional product for land managers; and 2) findings that will serve as the basis for additional applied wolf research.  This study was funded by CMU, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Nongame Wildlife Fund of MDNR.
